Day 44 - Back-filling Bents and tying steel

Image
The contractor started back filling the bent. Water was removed from the bent prior to them starting. An operator uses a vibratory compactor to compact the dirt to the necessary density. This is a picture of the barrier wall before the upper bars were installed.  After the bent was back filled this is the final product. The dirt may need to be brought up a little more before rock can be placed. This picture was taken after the barrier wall steel was finished being tied. It has necessary clearances and cross bracing.

Day 43 - Pulling forms and tying steel

Image
The contractor removed the forms prior to me arriving on the job site. The crew cleaned up trash and debris put tools away. This is a picture of the barrier wall steel that they are working on. Due to extreme heat the crew was working slower than usual and went home earlier in the day.

Day 42 - Tying barrier wall steel

Picture of the washout pit that was used during the deck pour. Most of the run off was contained. Arriving this morning the bridge was still soaking wet with standing water. The bridge has been watered since the burlap was placed on the deck and will continue to be watered until 7 calendar days have passed. One of the laborers works on tying steel for the barrier wall. While the contractor ties the steel they level it vertically ensuring that it will have enough concrete cover all around.

Day 38 - Deck Pour

Image
The pump truck was set in position so that it could reach the entire bridge. The workers standing on the bridge waiting for the concrete to arrive. This picture is of a drain that has been duct taped to prevent any concrete from getting down into it. The workers move as a team to position the concrete for the finishing machine. The pump truck operator swings the boom so the crew can place the concrete. The workers move concrete away from the finishing machine so that it does not spill back onto the finished surface. This is the setup from the pump truck. Concrete is dumped into the back and pumped to the deck. One guy operates the pump chute while another man uses a vibrator to consolidate the concrete. Current progress around the halfway point. The picture allows you to see the crown of the bridge. Another shot of the crew working on finishing the concrete. After the surface is finished then a wire brush is used to scrape the surface t...

Day 37 - Setting up finishing machine and installing drains

Image
Current progress upon arrival to the site. The contractor double checks the forms and ensures they have proper reinforcement to hold the concrete. The finishing machine arrived and the crew immediately began to unload it. The crane operator lifts the finishing machine off of the trailers. While the machine is suspended in the air the workers adjust the distance between the wheels based on where the rails are on the bridge. The skid steer operator and the crane operator work together to untangle the walking platforms which were sitting on top of the finishing machine. The crew works on removing all excess materials from the bridge to make room for the finishing machine. The crane operator swings the finishing machine over the bridge. After the finishing machine is ready to be sat on the deck the crew works on setting the height of the rail so that it clears the reinforcing steel without damaging it. The contractor lowers the finishing machine onto the ...

Day 35 - Tying barrier curb steel / forms

Image
The contractor worked on forms first thing in the morning starting with bent #2. The crane lowers a section of the forms so the workers can easily position it. This picture was taken on a wing wall of the east bent. It's purpose is to show the clearances of the rebar as well as the chamfer strip. After the recent rain event the water level in the creek has risen significantly. Another shot of the creek after the recent rain event. The lower part of the barrier curb that's been tied. The upper half will be tied on after the burlap is removed. Another shot of the barrier curb. A final shot of the barrier curb showing symmetry. This picture was taken on bent #2 after the forms were installed. It clearly shows acceptable clearance on either side of the reinforcing steel. Looking down onto the cap of bent #2 and observing the clearance for concrete cover. A piece of steel tied to a temporary 2x4 until the deck is poured. This is part of...
