Day 59 - Erosion Control Inspection

Image
Arriving on site I noticed that the Type III barricade has been damaged. Heavy rains from the night before have damaged all of the pages in the bulletin board. Several sheets will need to be replaced do to staining. The other side of the bulletin board. A bulldozer blocks off the bridge to prevent anyone from driving on it. Dirt work, and asphalt still need to be completed prior to opening to traffic. The north side barrier wall. A view of the bridge looking to the west. Unknown staining on the seam where the concrete truck was rejected. The slip forming machine had to re-position and concrete was vibrated into place. The slip forming machine had a difficult time lining back up with existing so a bump exists in the wall that is noticeable. The top of the wall also dips down. Another view of the wall with the defect. This is standing on the bridge looking to the south. The dirt has slumped down onto the rock blanket and needs to be fixed. A clo...

Day 57 - Rock Blanket

Image
The crew measures the taper point on the rock. Which is 30 feet from the center of the bridge. The bridge numbers were spray painted onto the bridge on the SW and NE corners. The operator works on digging the toe and cutting the bank to the correct slope. After the toe is dug, the crew cuts the Geo fabric material and takes it to the slope. Here the crew installs it so that the rock will be placed the material and not directly onto the dirt. After the Geo fabric is installed rock is hauled in and and placed on top of the blanket.

Day 56 - Drainage Pipe Intallation

Image
The view is of a deck drain after the deck has been sealed. It allows for water to flow into the drain and off of the bridge. A view of another deck drain. The wall after slip forming. The reflective tabs were installed according to spec. The crew works on installing a drainage pipe near 1+00 on the west side of the project. After the collar was placed and the pipe was aligned the placed clean rock on the sides of the pipe according to spec and back filled with dirt. The excavator operator works on back filling around the pipe. After the dirt was filled in a sheeps foot roller was used to compact it even more. It was then rolled with a dozer and excavator multiple times to ensure it was compacted. The dirt and grading superintendent will cut the entrance to the correct grade and place gravel. This is a temporary stopping point so the home owner has access to his field.

Day 50 - Barrier Curb Pour

Image
The workers have the line stretched out on an offset to guide the slip forming machine down a linear path. The machine set up on the end of the bridge ready to go. After the wall started to be slip formed.  The worker on the end starts to cut out the taper on the barrier wall. The finished taper prior to placing the concrete cure. A finished section of the wall. The slip forming machine ran really well and the concrete was good quality. Two laborers work on finishing the concrete as it comes out of the slip forming machine. The slip forming machine lines up on the North side of the bridge and prepares take concrete. This picture gives a comparison between the two sides of the bridge. Kind of like looking at a before and after in real time. The concrete in this truck went bad during the pour and was rejected by the inspector. This truck was not tested by performing an air or slump test. It was instead tested by taking the temperature. The dry co...

Day 49 - Ditch grading

Image
The ditch grade was shot with a level and determined that it was 2 feet higher than the plans wanted so the operator cleared and grubbed the section between 50+00 and 100+00. The clearing and grubbing took about 10 minutes. There wasn't much to do. This is an initial shot of the ditch prior to cutting it to grade. A small ditch is visible but it's also elevated quite a bit and needs to be brought down. While the operator was grading the ditch the other crew members worked on dismantling the crane and loading it onto the trailer. Progress of the ditch being cut and the berm being built. After everything is cut to grade the dozer tracker over to compact it as well as scraped it to give it a nice finish. After that was complete the operator worked on compacting the fill face for the asphalt approach pavement. A shot of the operator compacting the fill. The operator worked on cutting the opening to grade for the corrugated metal pipe. A...
