Day 7 - Removal of Abutment #2

Current view looking west from the east side of the project.

Operator works on removing dirt over the existing toe.

This shows a different angle of the operator working to expose the toe footing from the existing abutment wall. On the right side of the picture you can see a section of the wall that hasn't been removed yet.

The dirt is down in the creek bed but isn't entering the stream. No rain is in the forecast and the dirt will be removed within the next day or two.

Poison ivy covers a majority of the project. Contractor has requested to burn some scrap timber from the bridge and they are checking with the county and with the fire department. Contractor is aware of the ivy and is trying to avoid burning it.

This is looking west from the east side of the bridge. This picture gives a different angle of the existing abutment that's being removed.

Another angle of the existing abutment wall on bent #2.

The heat numbers are written on each pile and are clearly visible. A copy of the pile information was obtained from the contractor.

The breaker is chipping away at a toe footing on bent #2.

Another angle of the breaker.

This picture shows the depth of the hole in relation to the stream bed. Water is pooling indicating the elevation of the hole is at the water table.

The dozer operator is moving the dirt away from the hole to allow the excavator to dig deeper without the hole collapsing.

Another shot of the dozer moving the dirt.

Dirt has been removed on either side of the abutment.

The operator has cleared the wall and the toe is now clearly visible.

The excavator works on slowly backfilling the hole and compacting it with his bucket and tracks as he goes. Small 4-6" lifts were made.

The excavator made a ramp for the dozer to get into the hole and compact it even more.

The dozer had enough room to get 100% coverage with his tracks. The operator made 5-6 passes per lift ensuring that the entire section was compacted.
